Training program for secretaries of New World First Bus Company Employees Union

1. Background and Justification

Bus service is one of the important public services in Hong Kong. There are thousands of workers working in bus companies, most of them are bus drivers. The labour conditions in bus companies will be an example for the society.

New World First Bus Company founded in August 1998 employed about 3000 workers. And the New World First Bus Company Employees Union was founded in October 1998. As the newly established trade union, the core unionists (secretaries) who manage the union activities lack experience.

In order to empower unions, one of the important work of Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions is trade unionists education. Thus, HKCTU decided to organise this program.

6. Activities

Preparation of activities will be done by facilitators from HKCTU Trade Union Education Centre.

6.1 Training camp

Date: 28th to 30th Nov. 2000

Contents:

  1. Understand and clarify the job distribution between secretaries.
  2. Communication skill for recruits and maintain membership.
  3. Learning collective bargaining experiences from other unions.
  4. Project design and preparation action plans.
  5. Preparation of Recruitment Campaign

6.2 Recruitment campaign

Date: 1st to 31st Dec.2000

Contents:

All secretaries recruit members in workplaces, via face to face communication and distribute publications.

Materials:

Posters, booklets, handbills.

8. Monitoring, Reporting and Evaluation

World First Bus Company Employees Union standing committee and HKCTU Trade Union Education Centre established a task group for monitoring the progress of activities.

The task group must hold evaluation meeting and report to HKCTU standing committee within one month after the program was completed.
